JET-MILLING SUITABILITY

NMC 622 jet milling & particle size distribution

Evaluate NMC 622 dry jet milling against coarse-tail, fines and morphology criteria. Distinguish primary crystals, secondary particles and loose clusters.

What is NMC 622?

NMC 622 is a layered cathode oxide with a 6:2:2 nickel:manganese:cobalt ratio. The formula identifies its composition, but does not specify whether the delivered powder consists of single crystals or secondary aggregates.

Composition
LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2
Material family
Lithium-ion cathode materials
First processing decision
Determine whether the coarse tail represents unwanted loose agglomerates or the intended active-particle architecture.

What needs to be controlled in NMC 622 processing?

Particles and process stage

A shift in D90 may improve an agreed powder-handling target, yet mask an increase in fines. Compare the complete curves and representative microscopy instead of optimizing one percentile independently.

Handling and atmosphere

Specify exposure requirements for the supplier’s grade and coating. Do not transfer NMC 811 moisture limits or gas settings to NMC 622 without a separate material review.

Technical background: Direct observations of intergranular cracking in NMC811 particles. See the source limits below before applying a published method to this powder.

Which milling or mixing route fits NMC 622?

Jet milling

A controlled dry trial may be appropriate when coarse loose clusters are the issue. Define the acceptable fines fraction, retained particle shape and receiver recovery before evaluating a jet-milling method.

Ball milling

A mixer mill can be assessed for analytical homogenization or a defined precursor experiment. For finished active material, first establish why grinding is needed and which structural changes would invalidate the result.

Mixing and homogenization

Compare blending for additive distribution or batch homogenization. When blending powders with different sizes or densities, sample after transfer as well as directly from the container to detect segregation.

What to bring to a NMC 622 trial review

Identify the feed and task
Identify whether the coarse population is intended secondary particles, single crystals or loose clusters.
Define what must remain intact
Set an acceptable fines fraction and retained particle architecture as well as any coarse-end objective.
Agree on the comparison
Compare D10/D50/D90 and full curves with microscopy under the same dispersion method; measure powder flow separately if it is the goal.

Other preparation equipment when the task requires it

Precursor activation or ingredient blending is a different task from dry jet milling. These alternatives support a material-specific choice.

How should NMC 622 particle properties be evaluated?

Record D10, D50, D90, microscopy and contaminant uptake alongside sampling and dispersion conditions. If powder flow is the target, measure flow with an agreed method rather than inferring it from particle size.

D10The fine end
10% below this diameter
D50The median
50% below this diameter
D90The coarse end
90% below this diameter

Percentiles depend on the measurement and weighting basis. Report the method, dispersion conditions and complete curve. These labels are definitions, not target sizes or equipment guarantees.

Plan a NMC 622 feasibility test

  1. Define the material

Share the chemistry, processing stage, quantity and current condition.

  2. Agree on a trial

Confirm suitability, safety information, scope and acceptance measures before shipping.

  3. Compare the powder

Evaluate the intended change against morphology, contamination and retained function.

  4. Plan the next scale

Review feeding, recovery, handling and the additional validation needed.

Free feasibility testing depends on material suitability and an agreed scope. Ask which measurements are available, how much sample is required and which handling arrangements are needed. Do not ship powder before written instructions.

Moving from a laboratory trial to pilot or production work requires review of feeding, collection, cleaning, thermal behavior and throughput. A laboratory result does not establish performance at a larger scale.

NMC 622 processing questions

Can NMC 622 be jet milled?

It is an evaluation candidate for a defined NMC 622 dry-powder task, subject to particle-integrity, handling and recovery checks. The equipment list is not a validated application result.

Which NMC 622 particle properties should be specified?

Specify composition, processing stage, primary and secondary morphology where applicable, and the full particle-size distribution. For NMC 622, the first decision is: determine whether the coarse tail represents unwanted loose agglomerates or the intended active-particle architecture.

Does a lower NMC 622 D90 prove successful deagglomeration?

No. Check whether the coarse tail fell by separating loose clusters or by producing new fines. Compare the entire distribution and particle images using the same preparation method.

When should ball milling be considered for NMC 622?

Consider it when NMC 622 precursor activation, analytical preparation or deliberate material modification is the experiment. Confirm the intended change and the measurements that would identify unwanted damage before choosing settings.

Can NMC 622 powder flow be inferred from D50?

No. If flow is the processing objective, agree on a flow measurement. A median size alone does not establish how the powder will feed or transfer.

What is needed for a NMC 622 feasibility request?

Share the exact composition or a nonconfidential description, SDS, processing stage, starting condition, desired result and quantity. Include atmosphere and impurity limits. Glen Mills must agree on suitability, scope and shipping before receiving the sample.

Technical basis and source limits

NMC811 fracture research motivates a morphology check across the NMC family; it does not establish NMC 622 milling tolerances. Those remain a material-specific validation item.
